Workshop Olive 270 Building a Better Practice

Molly Gebrian and Sarah Niblack – This interactive workshop shares the science behind some of the most impactful findings, including interleaved practice, the power of taking breaks, and the importance of mental practice, and what musicians can learn from elite sports training programs. It will delve into crafting more productive self-talk, how to build up a tolerance for performance stress, and discuss why performance skills should be baked into every stage of the learning process.

3:30 pm – 4:30 pm Lecture Olive 272 Exploring Excerpts: Melissa Matson’s Imaginative Resource for Orchestral Study Amanda Perez, Elianna Nielsen, Richard Baxter Brown, and Gina Stonikas – Melissa Matson (Rochester Philharmonic, Eastman) has created an invaluable resource for aspiring orchestral violists and their teachers. This lecture will demonstrate how this guide helps a violist prepare the major orchestral audition excerpts and how it can be used in a small group setting. With a description of goals for each excerpt, specifically targeted exercises, and viola ensemble arrangements, this book gives a comprehensive look at the most challenging and important viola excerpts.
