Lecture Olive 272 Sustainable Instrument Making: Finding Alternatives to Rare Woods

Kathy Reilly – Viola-making honors a craft that has found a balance between form and function. The woods used, Maple, Spruce, and Ebony primarily, were selected for the beauty, tonal capacities, and strength. Quality materials are harder to find and forests of Ebony, Pernambuco, and even common species—Spruce and Maple—are over-forested and affected by climate change. Beautiful, sustainable materials exist! Reilly will describe legal requirements surrounding wood and her journey towards sustainability and environmentally friendly lutherie.

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Lecture Olive 229 Wilma and Anna - 18th Century Women Composers

Rebekah May – A brief history of Wilhelmine von Bayreuth and Anna Bon will be given, followed by a performance of three of their Sonatas, transcribed for Solo Viola. When transcribing these sonatas, the melody line was preserved and, as much as possible, the harmony from the continuo part has been included as well.
