Jennifer Stumm, prize winner in rhe 2005 Primrose Competition, gave a recital at the Denver School of the Arts on February 23. Ms. Stumm's program featured the Haydn Divertimento, Faure Songs, the Penderccki Cadenza per Viola Solo, Schumann Fantasiestr:iclu, and the Franck Sonata. The Sixth Annual Viva Ia Viola Day will be on April 15, 2006. This year's guest is Peter Slowik. Last year's event drew more rhan 100 violists from Colorado and Wyoming to this one-day event that fearu res viola ensembles, a master class fo r college srudcnrs, and a final concert. Seattle The Un iversity ofWashington School of Music hosted Viola Day on January 14, 2006. The event amacted over 6o violists from the state of Washington, as well as numerous music educators, to Brechemin Hall in the music building on the UW campus. T he evenr culminated in a viola play- in , where all violists was invit ed onstage for a read ing and per formance of selected works for viola ensemble. The stage at Brechemin Hall overflowed with violists, with some literally playing in the front row and aisles of the aud ience. A reception followed.
Viola Day began with a master class given by Susan Gulkis Assadi , principal violist of the Seatrle Symphony. Susan's expertly taught class featured violists Annika Donncn and Joel le Arnhold. A concert followed with Seattle Viola Society members Melia Warras and Mara Gearrnan, as well as vio lin ist Michael Jinsoo Lim and pianist Michelle Chang. T he reper toi re showed off the viola in a number of combinations (solo, with violin, with piano, and a viola duct). Works by Mozart, Prokofi ev,
