Conclusion The mechanics of bouncing strokes can be a mystery. I hope that this discussion will help violists demystify their use of brush, spiccato, and sautillé bow strokes. The key is to visualize the shape your bow-hand’s wrist must make to execute the stroke desired. Knowing when to perform a stroke—and where—will bring clarity to a player’s greater bow technique as well. The point of this article is to help violists prepare brush, spiccato and sautillé bow strokes, separately; then on a continuum, gradually progressing from one stroke to the next smoothly. The interspersion of different strokes and articulations within a bouncing stroke passage is not covered in this article, though it would be a fine topic for a companion piece of prose.
