FROM THE IVS P RESIDENCY

The superb violin-viola duos by Tomrer and Enoksson prompted recollection of an incident ar Congress XV in Ann Arbor (1987) during rhe premier of Maurice Gardner's Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra. 8 I was seared wirh Franz Zeyringer 9 ; Gardner and his son were immediately in front of us. Zeyringer, quire smitten wirh rhe concerto, leaned forward ar rhe end of rhe fusr move ment and said ro Mr. Gardner, "Das isr Musik!" The composer later rold me thar ir was rhe finest compliment of his career. A sim ilar and very telling moment unfolded in Linkoping when John Whire approached Lars Anders Tomrer following his splendid concert and said ro him, "Mr. Tomrer, you play in rhe tradition of Lionel Terris." I have no idea how Tomrer reacted, bur rhis was nor praise easily won ... or lightly given. Several people were recognized by rhe IVS both for their contributions ro rhe cur rent congress and for service to rhe viola, rhe first of rhese being congress host Otto Freudenthal and his committee. Allen Lee was recognized for his dedicated work in organizing and maintaining rhe viola web si re. Ann Frederking, IVS Treasurer and rhe Business Manager for rhe 1999 Guelph Congress, was awarded rhe Silver Alto Clef for distinguished con rriburions ro rhe Society and the viola. John White, editor, Terris scholar and host for rhe 1998 Glasgow Congress, was presented an engraved crystal vase likewise for distinguished scholarship and contributions ro the viola. Gunter Oj stedek, IVS Past President, became rhe first recipient of a new IVS award,

"Honorary Counselor for Life." We rhank rhese outstanding servants of the viola and music for rheir many contributions, secure in rhe knowledge tbar rhere are more ro come. The borrom line: Freudenthal and his col leagues, Gertrud Nilsson, Carolina Johansson, and Sven-Birger Svensson, pieced rogerher a most memorable celebration of rhe viola. Ir is a piry rhar rhere were nor more people present ro enjoy ir. 13 NOTES I . Hansen's method, A Mod~ Approach to Violin Techniqu~, is pub lished in English text by Warner/ ChappeUMusic, orway NS 2.
