2024 Primrose International Viola Competition Competitors
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, violist David Montreuil began his musical journey as a violinist before falling in love with the viola while beginning university. He has had the opportunity to attend festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival and School, the McGill International String Quartet Academy, the Schiermonnikoog Music Festival, the Netherland String Quartet Academy, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar, in which he was assistant principal viola. Mr. Montreuil was the winner of the 2023 Golden Violin Award and has been a prizewinner in the 2023 McGill Chamber Music Competition. He was a semi-finalist
in the 2022 and 2023 Prix d’Europe Competition and in the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Since 2022, He was the recipient of a Lloyd Carr-Harris scholarship (2018), the MacLeannan String Graduate Award (2019), and the Student Excellence Fellowship (2019). Mr. Montreuil holds a bachelor’s degree, graduate diploma, and master’s degree in Viola Performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he studied with Professor André Roy. He is currently pursuing an artist diploma.
Andy Park , a senior at Yale University, is pursuing Bachelor of Arts/Master of Music dual degrees under the guidance of Ettore Causa. Before attending Yale, he participated in the Colburn School Music Academy program, under Paul Coletti and Gina Coletti. He was a quarter finalist in the 2021 Primrose International Viola Competition and was invited to the first round of the 2023 ARD International Music Competition. As an orchestra enthusiast, Mr. Park took part in the 2018 New York String Orchestra Seminar and has won principal viola positions
in numerous orchestras. During previous summers, he actively participated in music festivals such as Music@Menlo and the Heifetz Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Seminar. Mr. Park has performed alongside esteemed artists such as Joshua Bell, Nicholas Kitchen, Yeesun Kim, Yefim Bronfman, and Pamela Frank. He also participated in master classes led by Roberto Diaz, Karen Dreyfus, and Mr. Coletti. Mr. Park currently uses a bow and a viola graciously loaned by the Maestro Foundation.
Haneul Park is studying at the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of Misha Amory, Roberto Diaz, and Hsin-yun Huang. She has won top prizes at numerous competitions, including third prize at the Cecil Aronowitz International viola competition. Most recently, Ms. Park participated in the Four Seasons Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Perlman Music Program Chamber workshop, Yellow Barn Young Artist Program, Moritzburg Music Festival, and New York String Orchestra Seminar. She has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, Donald Weilerstein, Ida Kavafian, Ani Kavafian, Steven
Tenenbom, Tai Murray, and members of the St. Lawrence Quartet. Before moving to the United States, Ms. Park entered the Seoul Arts High School with honors, and as a pianist, graduated from the Yewon Arts School and attended the Seoul Arts Center’s Gifted Children’s Music Academy. She received a Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory, studying with Kim Kashkashian.
