Emerging Artist: Lecture-Recital Mayman Hall 20th Century Violist-Composers: Sonata Principles in Solo Works by Fuchs, Porter, and Hindemith Nicholas Lindell – This lecture-recital surveys three solo viola works by 20th century violist composers working in America: Lillian Fuchs’ 1953 Sonata Pastorale, Paul Hindemith’s 1937 Sonate, and Quincy Porter’s 1930 Suite for Viola Alone. In particular, all three exhibit manifestations of tonally influenced, post-common-practice sonata forms, which are investigated and compared with original analyses. The implications of the composers’ performing careers and the solo viola’s unique compositional constraints are discussed as a possible cause for this stylistic congruence.
