Tejano Suite

Alex Molina Shawver (b.1994)

Ruben Balboa III, viola Alex Molina Shawver, piano

Tejano Suite is an exploration of both genre and identity. The Tejano or Conjunto genre includes folk music developed in the Texas-Mexico border region throughout centuries of cultural conflict, fusion, and synthesis. Each movement of the suite includes characteristic rhythmic material from common Conjunto dances, but the harmonic and formal idioms are true to my own style. For me, this practice of blending elements of my musical personality with my cultural heritage is a natural form of acculturation, which has always been a part of the rich and complex Tejano experience. While engaging and delighting in “authentic” and historical music, I have also learned to affirm and take joy in the authenticity of self. e authenticity of self.

Reflections on a Desert Winter

Dominic Dousa

I. On the Spirit Path

(b.1973)

II. Where the Cold Desert Wind Blows V. Toward the Boundless Expanse

Stephen Nordstrom, viola Dominic Dousa, piano

Dominic Dousa’s album of works for viola and piano “A Musical Portrait of the American Southwest” takes its inspiration from the land broadly referred to as the American Southwest, a wide-ranging region extending from the Great Plains of western Texas northwestwards to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Southwards to the desert lands of New Mexico and Artizo. The suite for viola and piano, Reflections on a Desert Winter , forms the core of this album. Written in 2015, each piece in the five-movement suite evokes the spirit of the land—one with a storied history and captivating natural beauty.
